The Sting Rays were the automotive success story of the year. Chevrolet had to add
a second shift to its St. Louis, Missouri assembly plant to keep up with demand, and
dealers reported owners waiting months for their cars to be built. By the end of the
model year, Corvette production would surpass the 20,000-unit milestone.
The 1980 Corvette was 250 lbs. lighter than the year before, mainly through the greater use of
aluminum and plastic. The doors and hood were less thick, and the roof panels were less dense.
New front and rear spoilers were moulded into the bumper caps, which helped aerodynamics.
However, the speedometer now maxed out at 85 mph.
