'74 MGB Roadster

In September 1962 the BMC (British Motor Corporation) launched their replacement for the MGA
sports car. The MGB was larger and more comfortable and weighed in at a basic price of £690.
The MGB proved popular thanks to its top speed of a heady 103 mph, overall fuel consumption
of 28 mpg and an affordable price. Competition at the time came mainly from the Rootes factory
with the Sunbeam Alpine, which was not quite so fast or economical. Competition also came in
the shape of the pretty Triumph TR4 which was slightly faster although more thirsty on fuel.

In 1974, both roadster and GT (including the V8) had received the black "5mph" bumpers and an
increase in ride height, in much the same way as the Midget had done. The front bumper was
shaped to merge into the grille which at least had a token resemblance to the earlier traditional
shape.

All MGBs utilized the BMC B-Series engine. This engine was essentially an enlarged version of that used
in the MGA with displacement being increased from 1622 cc to 1798 cc. The earlier cars used a three
main bearing crankshaft until mid 1965 when a five-bearing crankshaft design was introduced. Horsepower
was rated at 95 on both 3 main bearing and earlier 5 bearing cars with peak power coming at 5400 rpm
with a 6000 rpm redline. Torque output on all MGB is good with a peak of 110 lbf. US specification cars
saw power fall in 1968 with the introduction of emission standards and the use of air or smog pumps.
In 1971 UK spec cars still had 95 bhp at 5,500 rpm, with 105 lbf torque at 2500 rpm. By 1973 bhp it
was 94; by 1974 it was 87, with 103 lb torque; by 1975 it was 85 with 100 lbf.

As you can see from the photo's below, this example is in great looking condition. The exterior
body was professionally stripped down to bare metal and repainted the original colour Orange. The body
and paint on this classic looks amazing. The interior remains original black vinyl with the addition
of a new dash. On the exterior a black vinyl soft top is in good condition and included is the soft
top cover and full black tonneau cover. The 4 cylinder in line 1.8L engine has been
well maintained and shows really well. This car runs and drives extremely well, very solid on the
road and very solid throughout. This example has been well kept, this car is sure to please!
